Dr. Katherine Nolan and Carabella Dermatology specialize in the treatment of hair loss. We perform comprehensive, in depth hair loss evaluation using advanced dermoscopy, high resolution clinical and microscopic photography, and follicle level analysis.

Dr. Nolan received advanced training under Dr. Antonella Tosti, one of the world’s leading authorities in hair and scalp disorders and has presented on alopecia at national and international dermatology meetings, served as a keynote speaker for the Lupus Foundation, and remains actively involved in resident and physician education focused on hair loss and inflammatory scalp disease. Hair loss is a complex condition with many potential contributors, including genetics, hormones, autoimmune disease, inflammation, nutritional status, and systemic health. Because of this complexity, every hair loss consultation at Carabella Dermatology is intentionally comprehensive. We take a detailed medical and family history, evaluate contributing health factors, and when appropriate, order customized laboratory testing to identify underlying drivers that may otherwise be missed.

Hair loss can have many different causes and we treat the full spectrum of hair loss conditions including female pattern hair loss or androgenetic alopecia, alopecia areata, scarring alopecias like frontal fibrosing alopecia, lichen planopilaris, and central centrifugal cicatricial alopecia (CCCA). We also specialize in severe shedding or telogen effluvium, which can occur after a stressful event on the body like postpartum hair loss or after illness, including COVID-19 infection.

We are able to offer a comprehensive visit unlike at many other traditional practices where we can get a detailed history of your condition, discuss any contributing family or health history and then will often order a custom panel of bloodwork to further figure out the underlying causes. We also take detailed microscopic photography to track your progress. We offer the most up to date innovative therapies and will create a custom plan for you that may include a combination or oral medications, supplements, injections as well as custom prescription compounds and laser and light devices.

Hair loss, also known as alopecia, is a common condition that affects both men and women. There are several different types of hair loss, and the most common include:

  1. Androgenetic Alopecia: This is the most common type of hair loss and is also known as male-pattern baldness or female-pattern baldness. It is caused by a combination of genetic and hormonal factors and typically results in a receding hairline and thinning of hair on the scalp.

  2. Telogen Effluvium: This type of hair loss is characterized by diffuse thinning of the hair on the scalp. It is caused by a disruption in the normal hair growth cycle, such as a significant hormonal change, stress, or certain medications.

  3. Alopecia Areata: This is an autoimmune disorder that causes hair loss on the scalp, as well as on other parts of the body. It is characterized by round, smooth patches of hair loss and can be accompanied by itching, redness, and burning of the skin.

  4. Traction Alopecia: This type of hair loss is caused by prolonged tension on the hair, such as from tight hairstyles, braids, or ponytails. It typically occurs along the hairline, at the temples, and on the scalp.

  5. Scarring Alopecia: This type of hair loss is caused by damage to the hair follicles, which results in scarring and permanent hair loss. It can be caused by various skin conditions such as lichen planus, frontal fibrosis alopecia, central centrifugal cicatricial alopecia and certain types of lupus.

Treatment options will vary depending on the type of hair loss and its underlying cause. Some common treatments include topical minoxidil, oral finasteride, steroid injections, low-level laser therapy, hair transplantation, and in some cases, immunotherapy. We specialize in hair loss and are here to help ascertain a proper diagnosis and custom treatment plan.
